Steve Lin to perform

September 28, 2008

Wednesday Oct 15 at 7:00 PM Classical Guitarist Steve LIn will be performing at Rainbow Cathedral MCC, 225 N 2nd St.  A love offering will be accepted.  Check out his music at www.linguitar.com.

Steve writes:

The focus is on the experience of listening. I’ve found that questions

encourage focused and analytical listening. It also turns into

introspection and thinking. One of my fundamental ideas driving my

outreach is to emphasize that music, like any great cultural or social

phenomenon, should make us /think/.

The intent is completely different from a traditional concert format,

which can be passive and individualistic. The benefit of this outreach

is communal — all listeners are allowed to participate, use their

imagination, think and rethink. The beauty is that there is no right or

wrong, just how deeply you want to allow your thoughts and imaginations

to flow. As the “moderator”, I can guide and fill in on historical and

musical details, balancing objectivity and subjectivity.

For myself, I really enjoy engaging with non-musicians because as a

musician, my perception of music is biased. For a long time I’ve been

curious to know—to really know—how “normal people” hear music. It’s a

fascinating thing for me, because the experiences are incredibly

individualized. The responses that I get have often reshaped how I

interpret my music or have even reminded me of why I continue to perform.

call to worship Sept 21

September 24, 2008

We celebrate a God

All who lives and speaks in sunsets,
in love-wrapped gifts,
and fleeting butterflies.

We celebrate a Christ

All who honored our humanness,
who climbed trees,
skinned knees;
who laughed and cried,
loved and wept, bled and died.

We celebrate a Spirit,

All who mystically joins us
to people everywhere,
and incorporates us into Christ.

We celebrate a church,

All seeking, however imperfectly,
to act justly, love mercy,
and walk humbly with our God
